Nat banished him from the hospital under the guise of picking up her things and bringing her lunch, though Logan suspected she tired of his hovering and wanted alone time to reflect and maybe mourn. It felt as if they'd lost something, just with the doctor's news. He didn't remember the drive back to the apartment building he'd purchased, so the whole family could have a floor and be together in the city as Nat's pregnancy meant more and more time in the city. He looked up and found himself in front of the valet stand with a nice kid standing by the door, waiting for the keys.

He didn't know how he made it up the elevator, either, but when he opened the door to his apartment, he found Edgar waiting inside. His security chief and confidant held his adopted daughter, Ella Rose, and immediately held out a glass of scotch to Logan. "I sent Isobel to the hospital, she's bringing stuff to Natalia. I thought you could use a drink."

Logan swallowed it in a gulp and went for a second round. He hoped the liquor would kill the pain and disorientation, but it only dulled his panic. "There might be something wrong with the babies."

Edgar picked up the bottle and pointed him to the couches. "Sit."

Logan did, and slowly Edgar dragged the details out of him. Ella Rose babbled and shrieked and eventually settled down to chew on some board books that Edgar brought, and Logan watched her play, wondering if he'd see his kids doing the same things when they got to be her age.

"I can't live without her," Logan said, knowing that Edgar alone would understand. Edgar had already lost a mate, and though he'd found happiness with Isobel, he still carried the burden of his mate's death. Logan focused on the liquor. "I thought I would be angry, man. And maybe I will be. But I can't — I just can't believe it. I can't even begin to understand what it will be like if something happens to her or the kids."

"Did she agree to be changed?" Edgar redirected Ella Rose as she tried to eat his cell phone, and instead tapped the screen to some kind of game before letting her play with it.

"Seems like that would be a simple way of mitigating some of the risk."

"She doesn't want to be," Logan said. He still couldn't believe it. "Something about wanting to be human when she has them, so she doesn't have to share."

"She's scared," Edgar said. "And understandably so. Everything is changing — new babies and she's a first time mother, and her relationship with you will change, and to add onto that changing the nature of herself... No wonder she shut down. But you have to make her understand, Logan. No, you won't survive it if anything happens to her. You'll lose your fucking mind and go on a rampage, and then it will be up to me and Atticus to try to control you — and when that fails, we'll have to kill you.
